Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk has weighed in on the numerous iterations of the show made by YouTubers like MrBeast. The South Korean drama involves a deadly competition where 456 players from all walks of life play a series of children’s games for a chance to win the ₩45.6 billion cash prize. They soon realize that the contest’s dark twist means only one will survive and those who fail to advance to the next game will face immediate execution. Hwang, an acclaimed Korean filmmaker, conceived the concept for Squid Game in 2009 based on his own financial struggles and the country’s economic issues.

At the recently concluded Gotham Awards in New York where the Korean drama won Best Breakthrough Series, Hwang revealed his thoughts on the many YouTubers copying the show. When asked by ET Canada, the Asian filmmaker didn’t hide his amusement and even revealed that he’s seen some of these videos. In the end, Hwang gave his stamp of approval and said that these YouTube videos “helped him promote the show.” The games featured on Squid Game are inspired by street games children in South Korea traditionally play. Naturally, the show’s international audiences are curious to try the challenges themselves for fun. Many have documented their hilarious but realistic attempts on social media such as TikTok and Instagram. Meanwhile, Squid Game director teases Gi-hun’s Darth Vader vs. Jedi ‘test’ in potential season 2. Netflix’s hit Korean drama ended its first season with Seong Gi-hun, a.k.a. Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), deciding not to get on a plane to see his daughter. Instead, he turned around on the jet bridge to seek revenge on the sadistic game that almost cost him his life and left 455 other contestants dead. And while the streaming service hasn’t renewed Squid Game yet, Lee and director Hwang Dong-hyuk are already teasing how Gi-hun could face an even bigger decision in season 2.
